Charles W. Coffin, 99, of Farmington, passed away at 2:45 p.m. Thursday, April 30, 2015 at the Donnellson Health Center one day prior to his 100th birthday.
Born May 1, 1915 in rural Farmington, Iowa the son of Clarence Ellsworth "Bud" and Edna M. (Collins) Coffin. On June 18, 1939 he married Mildred J. Cronin in Kahoka, Missouri. She preceded him in death on March 9, 1988. He married Ruth Apfel Lamm on November 10, 1990. She preceded him in death on May 17, 2004.

Survivors include one sister Iris Kerr of Farmington, one nephew Richard (Donna) Smith of Billings, Montana, one niece Becky Fry of Farmington. One step-son Jack (Dorothy) Lamm of Donnellson. Two step-daughters Sandra (James) Smith of West Burlington, Iowa and Betsy (Allen) Sommerfeld of Pompano Beach, Florida, twelve step-grandchildren and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, one infant sister Effie, his sister Charlotte Smith and a stepson-Gary Lamm.

Charles was raised in the Farmington area and graduated from the Farmington High School in 1933. He worked 24 years for Valley Limestone and Gravel in Farmington and Bonaparte before and after World War II. He was a United States Army Veteran serving in World War II. Charles was awarded four battle stars and the Notorious Service Plaque for service in the European Theatre with the third Army. From 1959-1979 when they retired he and his wife were co-owners and operators of C&M Sales and Service, an Allis Chalmers Implement Dealership. Charles was a member of the Farmington United Methodist Church. The Farmington American Legion Post #231, the Farmington Fireman's Association, the 718th R.O.B. Veterans. He was a Past Master of Mt. Moriah Lodge #27, George Washington Masonic Lodge # 18 A.F. & A.M of Donnellson, Past Worthy Matron of Chapter #24 and a member of the Artaban Chapter Order of Eastern Star in Donnellson.

Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Farmington. The family will meet with friends from 1:00 P.M. until the time of the Masonic service on Saturday at the Farmington United Methodist Church.

Masonic Rites will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at the Farmington United Methodist Church. The funeral service will follow with Pastor Goldie Laymon officiating. Burial with full military rites by the Farmington American Legion will be held in the Greenglade Cemetery in Farmington.

A memorial has been established in his memory for the Farmington United Methodist Church or Hospice of Central Iowa.
