Daniel Joseph Mertens, 73, of rural Salem, Iowa, passed away at 11:09 a.m. Saturday, July 4, 2015 as the result of a farm accident at his home.

Born December 20, 1941 near Salem, Iowa the son of Christian and Mary (Neuweg) Mertens. On March 22, 1969 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, he married Christine Zihlman. They later divorced. In 1998, he married Carole Houseal. They later divorced.

Survivors include four sons, Mike (Niki) Mertens of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa, Tony (Tammy Wellington) Mertens of Salem, Iowa, Chad (Denise Stambaugh) of Winfield, Iowa, and Marty (Jenny) Mertens of Salem, Iowa; one daughter, Lynn (Joe) Grelk of Crawfordsville, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; four brothers, Francis Mertens of Sacramento, California, Alfred "Ike" (Sherri) Mertens of St. Paul, Iowa, Paul Mertens of Ft. Madison, Iowa, and John Mertens of Salem, Iowa; two sisters, Harriet Coster of Sacramento, California and Jeanne (Gary) Kos of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Dan was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton, Iowa. He was a 1960 graduate of St John's High School in Houghton, Iowa. He was a lifelong farmer on the farm he was born and raised on. He owned and operated Dan's County Auto. Dan served in the United States Army Reserves. He was a member of the Houghton Knights of Columbus Council #3905. Dan enjoyed watching Nascar races, spending time with his children and grandchildren, checking on his crops and farm, going to farm machinery auctions, and visiting and teasing his friends and those he did business with. He also enjoyed old Ford and Lexus cars.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Houghton. The family will meet with friends from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening at the church. There will be a Knights of Columbus Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Christian Wake Service at 7:00 p.m.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at St. John's Catholic in Houghton with Father Bruce DeRammelaere as the Celebrant. Burial will be at the St. John's Cemetery in Houghton with full military rites performed by the Henry County Honor Guard.

Memorials may be made to Houghton Fire Rescue or St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
