Jerald Dwight Wells, 80, of Montrose, passed away at 4:40 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2015 at his home.

Born September 6, 1934 at Exline, Iowa the son of Pearl and Laretta Shadden Wells. On September 26, 1969 at Kahoka, Missouri he married Judy Elston.

Survivors include his wife Judy of Montrose, two sons: Darin (Marla) Weirather of Carthage, Illinois and Brian (Jennifer) Wells of Donnellson, two daughters Carrie Weirather Myers (John) of Nowata, Oklahoma and Beth Weirather Wood of Bonaparte, Iowa. Eight grandchildren Andrea (Tanner) Scott, Tyler (Jackie) Weirather, Trenton Weirather, Morgan Weirather, Jake Wood, Dalton Wood, Logan Wells and Gannon Wells and one great grandchild Jayla Weirather. Also surviving are one brother Terry (Ardie) Wells of Quincy, one half-sister Margaret Londrigen of Donnellson, two sisters-in-law Juanita Wells of Donnellson and Pat Hills of Quincy, Illinois and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son-in-law Rick Wood, two brothers Garry and Gene, his step-mother Isabelle and his beloved black lab Molly.

Jerry was a graduate of Livonia High School in Missouri, where he was an outstanding basketball and baseball player. He was a United States Army Veteran serving during the Korean War. Jerry worked at Steel Castings in Keokuk and at AMAX near Fort Madison. He coached his sons in baseball and basketball and was a very loving father and grandfather. Jerry spent endless hours volunteering at the Watermelon Festival, hauling and cutting melons. He was also one of several men that built the original concession stand at the Montrose ball park. He enjoyed playing euchre and cribbage, was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He also enjoyed the company of his black lab Molly.

Friends may call after 1:00 p.m. Thursday at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson with the family meeting friends from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the funeral home.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Schmitz-Lynk Funeral Home in Donnellson with Pastor Elaine Foley officiating. Burial will be in the Montrose Cemetery. There will be flag presentation at the cemetery by the Donnellson American Legion Post #474.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorials be made to Lee County Hospice, Montrose Riverfront Inc. or to the Montrose Fire and Rescue.
