John Roland Leonard, 55, of rural Niota, Illinois, passed away at 8:40 a.m. Sunday, February 22, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa.

Born January 10, 1960 in Fort Madison, Iowa, the son of Ronald H. and Lou Ann (Newton) Leonard. On December 17, 1982 he married Susan R. Bendixen in Niota, Illinois.

Survivors include his wife Susan of rural Niota, four children Robin Rae Gould (Jose) Medina of Anchorage, Alaska, Clarence Dale Gould, Jr. of Cold Bay, Alaska, Joshua Hiram (Carie) Leonard of Nauvoo, Illinois and Jamie Lee Leonard of Niota, Illinois, seven grandchildren Thrasher John Medina, Tito Jager Rocky Medina, Jonathan Robert Myers, Kyler Bradin Leonard, Brock Edward Myers, Jordan Chance Leonard and Brooklyn Mariah Leonard, his parents Ron and Lou Ann Leonard of Niota, Illinois, one brother Dr. Ronald K. (Janet) Leonard of Roseville, Illinois, one sister Nancy (Kevin) Schmitz of Nauvoo, Illinois, one uncle Larry Leonard and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, one uncle Roland Leonard and one aunt Elaine Speck.

John was a 1978 graduate of Nauvoo Colusa High School. He was a member of the Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church in rural Niota. He and his father farmed near Niota. He did commercial salmon fishing in Alaska for seventeen years and had also worked for Roquette America. He enjoyed being a dad, spending time with his grandchildren, farming, basketball, deer hunting, music and his dog Bruiser.

Friends may call after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church in rural Niota where the family will meet with friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. that evening.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, February 26, 2015 at the Appanoose Faith Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Poland officiating.

Burial will be at Myers Cemetery in rural Niota.
